History, Purpose and Usage<\/h2>\n\n

Lorem ipsum, or lipsum as it is sometimes known, is dummy text used in laying out print, graphic or web designs. The passage is attributed to Letraset, a popular manufacturer of dry transfer sheets for text and other design elements.<\/p>\n\n

It is believed that they scrambled parts of Cicero\u2019s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum in the 1960s for use in their Body Type (basically body paragraph placeholder) sheets. It usually begins with:<\/p>\n\n

\u201cLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

The purpose of lorem ipsum is to create a natural looking block of text (sentence, paragraph, page, etc.) that doesn’t distract from the layout. A practice not without controversy, laying out pages with meaningless filler text can be very useful when the focus is meant to be on design, not content.<\/p>\n\n

The passage experienced a surge in popularity during the 1960s when Letraset used it on their dry-transfer sheets, and again during the 90s as desktop publishers bundled the text with their software. Origins and Discovery<\/h3>\n\n

Until recently, the prevailing view assumed lorem ipsum<\/em> was born as a nonsense text. \u201cIt\u2019s not Latin, though it looks like it, and it actually says nothing,\u201d Before & After magazine answered a curious reader<\/a>, \u201cIts \u2018words\u2019 loosely approximate the frequency with which letters occur in English, which is why at a glance it looks pretty real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

As Cicero would put it, \u201cUm, not so fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The placeholder text, beginning with the line \u201cLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit\u201d, looks like Latin because in its youth, centuries ago, it was Latin.<\/p>\n\n

Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar from Hampden-Sydney College, is credited<\/a> with discovering the source behind the ubiquitous filler text. In seeing a sample of lorem ipsum, his interest was piqued by consectetur\u2014a genuine, albeit rare, Latin word.
